English 11
"College
in the High School" (CIHS) Program
I assume that anyone trying to achieve
college credit for the class will take responsibility for his/her own learning
in a way that is suitable for college students. The requirements for this class are already fairly heavy, so the
additional work for college credit, which was settled upon in conference with
the English Department at UMC, requires three things:
1) You must read an additional book as
assigned by the instructor.
2) You must complete one “project” to
demonstrate your understanding of the book, your knowledge of the author’s
career, and your awareness of the book’s importance. The project may include
any of the following options, or others as arranged in advance with me.
a) Write a paper on a topic
pre-arranged in conference with me;
b) Make an oral presentation on a
topic pre-arranged in conference with me in front of the class or a group of
CIHS students;
c) Participate
in an oral exam/interview on a topic pre-arranged in conference with me in the
presence of other CIHS students.
3) The last test you take at the end of
the year must be a “final exam,” in the sense that you will have short-answer
and essay questions that cover subjects from the entire course. You will have a
good idea in advance of the test what sorts of things you are expected to know.
The book and project are evaluated on an
A-B-C-F scale—you read the book and demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding to get credit. You MAY
have to repeat the process as necessary to complete it satisfactorily, but this
is seldom required.
The written exam requirement is graded and
will be added to your other class work and test scores to determine your
college grade. So far, the high-school
grades and college grades have been basically the same. It is possible that a student might get a
higher or lower grade for the college credit than for the high school credit,
depending on the performance of the student on the final.
You should plan to finish all
college-credit work by mid-May. However, finishing earlier is recommended to avoid
the last-minute scheduling conflicts that arise when many people procrastinate.
No student will be allowed to extend college work beyond June 1, 2002.
