Hi, Substitute Teacher! Welcome to my classroom. I have not been feeling well for several days, so I'm taking bed-rest for a day to see if that helps build up my immune system a little.

Here's the schedule for the next two days, in case I need to visit the clinic tomorrow or in case any students need advance information for a planned absence:

RULES (peculiar to my class, apparently):

No food, candy, or drinks (except water) in my classroom.

One person uses PASS (“Bald Man's Hairbrush”) at a time—five-minute limit.

No sitting or leaning on desktops or backs of seats.

Everyone in their own desks until attendance has been taken.

No talking or sleeping during video—it will be on the test!

No crowding around door before ending bell.

Other rules the same as Student Handbook and other classes.

Behavior violations with substitute teacher cost double on behavior grade.

SOME THINGS TO DO FOR ME:

  1. In periods 2, 4, 5, and 6, please collect the rough drafts of their Personal Narratives, clipping them together by class period and keeping them separate from late work handed in after you have collected these at the beginning of each class.

  1. Please mark your attendance on the seating charts rather than in the red book. Your seating charts are accurate, and students know to report to their correct seats for attendance. After that, they are free to move when I'm there, but for maintaining discipline, you may want to tell them to remain in seating chart order.

  2. As daily assignments come in, please clip them together by class period, but separate from the on-time Personal Narratives.

USING SKYWARD:

(If it's too complicated, write the names of missing students on a slip during the period and early next period have a student run it to Liz Rust in the office.)

  1. Open SAFARI by sliding the cursor to the far left side of the screen to reveal the application taskbar and scroll through the programs until you see the blue SAFARI compass, and single-click.

  2. When the browser opens, the third level of menus at the top lists some FAVORITES bookmarks, including SKYWARD at the third spot—again, single-click.

  3. On the SKYWARD security screen, my USERNAME is “lbarton” (Get my P-WORD from Kevin Weber. Please keep this information confidential and unavailable to students.)

  4. In the left navigation bar, click on MY CLASSES and then open the 1st PERIOD class OPTIONS.

  5. Again, in the left navigation bar, click on ATTENDANCE. You can enter attendance as either ABSENT or TARDY. Clicking PRESENT will delete a mistake or change status for a student arriving excused tardy.

  6. Once you have entered attendance for a class, click SAVE in the upper right corner, which will return you to the class list. At the top of the list is a NEXT button, which will open the next class. You can leave SKYWARD open on this page. Hide it by typing OPENAPPLE-H. Clicking SAFARI on the left nav-bar again will open directly to SKYWARD, where you last left it.

  7. If possible, try to get attendance in by the end of each class. Sometimes I have to do two or three periods at a time after they pile up, and I've even been known to do them all at the end of the day before going home, but that tends to cause problems!

I hope you have a pleasant day. Make note of problems and I will be sure they are corrected before your next visit. These are really a fun bunch of students, but a couple can be a little testy. I can be reached at home (5634), but the office is 201 (Liz) or 203 (Debbie), and they will be happy to send in backup.

You'll have para-assistance in 1st and 5th periods. The first period para can help you get oriented for the freshmen, whose texts have to be passed out from the shelves—usually the last student in each row passes them out, and as they finish the asignment, they can return the books to the shelves. They don't have to do any question in the set if it says “Reader's Notebook.” If you'd prefer to read the story with or to the 9th graders, that would be great, but it isn't necessary.

If you choose to read with the 11th graders, allow those who prefer to read alone to sit outside in the flex area if they promise to stay where you can see them and keep it quiet so the District Office staff don't complain, but all students should return to the room during the last ten mintes to finish up the written work.
